Additional News on Pre-College Engineering Education Act
On July 20, 2016, VSPE sent letters to the Vermont State Senators Leahy and Sanders, and Congressman Welch regarding HR5679, described below. VSPE received the following response from Senator Leahy:
Thank you for contacting me about the importance of supporting education funding, specifically in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
As a father and a grandfather, I understand the importance of providing our nation's children with education that promotes success and prosperity in the long term. As computer science and technology expand both in the classroom and throughout the workforce, I agree with you that it is crucial students develop skills early on to support their future success in these fields.
That is why I have long supported the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act which provides funding to secondary and post-secondary vocational education programs. I strongly support the vital role that funds from the Perkins program play in the delivery of technical education to students throughout the state of Vermont. The education that students receive at the state's technical colleges helps drive the economic engine of Vermont by ensuring that our businesses have the employees they need to compete.
I was also proud to support the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act, which was signed into law on December 10, 2015, and included several provisions to expand STEM education in the classroom. Specifically, I am pleased the bill increases professional development initiatives for STEM educators, and extends STEM programming to schools through a partnership with non-profits and businesses in STEM fields.
Please know that as the Senate debates its fiscal priorities for the coming year, I will continue to urge members across the aisle to consider strong funding for STEM education initiatives. Thank you again for contacting me about this important issue, and please keep in touch.
